Workshops & Demos From 2010 Fair

10am - Acupressure during Childbirth with Michelle Hughes
Learn how acupressure to specific points on the body can help reduce the pain of contractions and help support a woman through labour. This 45 minute class will be hands on and a manual will be provided for easy reference and practice at home. Bring your labour support person, friend or come and learn for yourself.
Michelle Hughes is a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine at Comox Valley Acupuncture with a practice that focuses on women's reproductive health, fertility and pregnancy support. Michelle is a Fellow of the American Board of Reproductive Medicine and has trained with many of North America's leading experts in obstetrics and gynecology.

11am -The Truth about Cloth with Sherry Turnball and Kristina Jespersen
This workshop will cover all of the truths and myths about using reusable diapers. The class will include discussion and demonstration of different diapering systems with plenty of opportunity to see and feel several different diapers. Cost comparison and washing and care instructions will also be discussed. The truth about cloth will give you an opportunity to have your questions about resusable diapers answered!
Sherry Turnbull and Kristina Jespersen have been co-owners of Podlings since June 2008, This pair started out with their love of Consignment and all things Organic and Eco-Friendly.
They have since grown with the opening of the Resource Center in January of this year and the online store opening this May. These friends are passionate about
what they do, and grateful for the Community's support!

12pm - Intro to Infant Massage with Kirsten Werner
During this workshop you will learn how to provide the nurturing touch of massage to your baby. There will be discussion of the many benefits of baby massage including: improved infant-parent attachment, relaxation leading to better sleep, body awareness, improved digestion, and much more. Kirsten Werner is a registered massage therapist, doula, and mother of two.

1pm - Exploring Your Birth Journey through the Lab-o-rinth with Sarah Hoffman and Monica Hofer
The labyrinth is an ancient, universal symbol representing our journey through life, ordeals and initiations. It has long been associated with birth and rebirth and is thus the perfect symbol and “map” of the journey through pregnancy, labour and postpartum. In this workshop, the labyrinth symbol will be used and transformed into the “lab-o-rinth” through the use of birth art, journaling and other forms of creative exploration. Sarah Hoffman is a Birthing from Within Mentor, Certified Childbirth Educator, Doula and Pregnancy Outreach Worker. She also works with families of children age 0-5yrs and facilitates parenting and childcare workshops. Monica Hofer is a certified Childbirth Educator and Doula, Therapeutic Herbalist, Breastfeeding Counsellor, Reflexologist and Early Years Group Facilitator. She also teaches African Hand Drumming and leads community choir.

2pm - Belly Casting with Jordan Guignard
Belly casting is an artful way to preserve the memory of your pregnancy. Using a gypsum embedded gauze, the belly cast becomes a 3D sculpture capturing your pregnant body in its full form. Once the cast is made, it can be painted or decorated and hung on the wall. It’s a fun, relatively quick, prenatal activity to do with your partner or a trusted friend. Celebrate your growing body by casting that beautiful belly!
Jordan Guignard is a certified doula, childbirth educator, breastfeeding counsellor, and mother of two.

3pm - Baby Wearing Basics with Samantha Schneider
This workshop will offer an introduction to a variety of baby carriers available, their pros and cons, and advantages to wearing your baby. Carriers will be available to try out, as well as pointers given on carrying your baby.
Samantha Schneider is a mom of a 2 year old daughter and 5 month old son. Sam found her love of baby wearing after the birth of her daughter and has spent extensive time researching baby wearing. She hopes to introduce others to this wonderful parenting tool.
